FERDINAND - A SHELTERING WINGS SUCCESS STORY

Ferdinand was abandoned by his mother when he was about 2 years old. The mother left him in the care of the mother of one of her friends and the mother has not been heard from since. Ferdinand was about 5 years old when he came to the orphanage.

Social Action, the Burkina branch of our Children and Family Services, found Ferdinand sleeping at the bus station in Yako. They called us and asked us to take Ferdinand.

The woman 'caring' for Ferdinand was not a true relative of the child and she cared for him somewhat but not adequately. When a home study was done neighbors said that often she fixed food for herself and her children and told Ferdinand to go into town and beg for some food. It was at times like this that Ferdinand went to the bus station begging for food and would sleep there.

When Ferdinand came to the orphanage he responded to the name of Koukou. We had never heard of this name and when we inquired as to the meaning of it, we learned that it was a name that often people called their dogs. So, we changed his name to Ferdinand.

Ferdinand is a beautiful little boy who may have found a new home. We are going to wait one more year for his mother or his father to come forward and say that they want their child. In the meantime Ferdinand is moving to Ouagadougou where a couple who have no children have asked for him. They will care for Ferdinand as their own and wait for one year when they can formally adopt him.
